Best Selma Blair Movies: A Friendly Fan’s Guide
Table of Contents
Selma Blair’s career has spanned everything from teen comedies to intense dramas, and I’ve always loved her cool, confident vibe. She’s “known for her roles in Cruel Intentions, Legally Blonde, The Sweetest Thing, and the Hellboy franchise” – and that just scratches the surface of Selma Blair movies that deserve a watch. Let’s take a chatty stroll through some of her most memorable films, starting in the 90s and moving forward. (P.S. I’ve always thought of Selma Blair movies as my comfort watches – hope you find your favorites here too!)

Cruel Intentions (1999)
Cruel Intentions is a steamy late-’90s teen drama (a modern take on Dangerous Liaisons) and one of the earliest Selma Blair movies. Blair plays Cecile Caldwell, the sweet and naive step-daughter of a high-society headmaster. In the plot, two manipulative stepsiblings (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe) make a cruel bet about seducing innocent classmates – and Cecile gets caught in their scheme. A fun behind-the-scenes fact: Blair won the 2000 MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss with co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar for this film! You can stream Cruel Intentions (1999) on Amazon Prime Video for free with ads – a great place to see young Selma on screen again.
Legally Blonde (2001)
Legally Blonde (2001) is a classic comedy and another hugely popular Selma Blair movie. In it, Reese Witherspoon stars as Elle Woods, a bubbly sorority president who goes to Harvard Law School to win back her ex. Selma Blair plays Vivian Kensington, the initially snobby sorority sister who becomes Elle’s best friend. (Spoiler: by the end Vivian’s attitude softens and she even helps Elle ace a big case.) Fun fact: Blair and Witherspoon were already friends from Cruel Intentions, which helped their on-screen chemistry here. In 2025 you can stream Legally Blonde on services like fuboTV or Philo (and even free with your library on Kanopy/Hoopla).
The Sweetest Thing (2002)
Figure: The theatrical poster for The Sweetest Thing (2002). Selma Blair’s name is on the poster alongside Cameron Diaz and Christina Applegate.
The Sweetest Thing (2002) is a raunchy road-trip comedy and a fun Selma Blair movie to binge. It stars Cameron Diaz as Christina, who after years of avoiding love finally meets “the one” – Peter. When Peter suddenly vanishes, Christina sets out on a wild cross-country adventure to find him, dragging along her two best friends Courtney (Christina Applegate) and Jane (Selma Blair). Blair’s character Jane Burns is the party-loving, fearless friend of the group. (Plot in brief: Christina chases Peter from L.A. to San Francisco, with plenty of outrageous hijinks in between.) In 2025 The Sweetest Thing is available to stream on Netflix, so you can enjoy all the 2000s fashion and comedy gold for free if you have a Netflix account.
Hellboy (2004)
Switching genres, Hellboy (2004) is one of Selma Blair’s coolest fantasy/action movies. In this Guillermo del Toro film, Ron Perlman plays Hellboy – a demon-turned-paranormal-investigator – and Blair is Liz Sherman, Hellboy’s friend and fellow agent. Liz is a troubled psychic with fire powers (the movie even shows her in a mental hospital because of her unstable pyrokinetic abilities). In the story Hellboy and Liz team up at the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense to stop a sorcerer’s apocalyptic plot. You can stream Hellboy on HBO Max right now, and it’s also available free (with a library card) on Hoopla or Kanopy – definitely worth watching to see Blair go head-to-head with monsters.
The Fog (2005)
Next up is The Fog (2005), a Stephen King-inspired horror remake. Selma Blair plays Stevie Wayne, a sultry radio DJ who broadcasts warnings to her coastal town when a deadly mist rolls in. The plot: a centuries-old ship full of undead lepers drifts into town under cover of fog, seeking revenge. Stevie’s role is memorable because she’s the one voice screaming on the radio to beware! As of 2025 The Fog isn’t streaming on a paid service, but you can watch it for free with Kanopy (if your library provides it). It’s a spooky change of pace from Blair’s comedies and shows she can handle horror just as well.
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
Blair reprised her role as Liz Sherman in Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008), the sequel to Hellboy. In this installment, Liz is now a full-fledged Bureau agent, and she and Hellboy (Perlman) team up to protect a magical crown from an evil elf prince. (It’s exactly as quirky as it sounds – full of del Toro’s imagination.) Unfortunately, Hellboy II isn’t on any free streaming platform right now – you’d have to buy or rent it online. Still, it’s a fun ride and another reminder of the cool supernatural characters Selma Blair movies bring to life.
Mom and Dad (2017)
One of Blair’s newer films is Mom and Dad (2017), a dark horror-comedy where “everyone’s parents suddenly want to kill them”. Selma plays Kendall Ryan, one of the teenage kids in a suburban family (Nicolas Cage and Selma are the mom and dad). It’s wild and pretty gory – a very different kind of Selma Blair movie! You can stream Mom and Dad free with ads on The Roku Channel or via Starz. Watching Blair in this bitingly insane thriller is a blast, especially since her character goes from normal teen to trying to survive both her parents.
What’s Next: New Selma Blair Movies
Selma Blair has been taking it easy in the past few years, but good news – she is returning with new movies. Variety reports that she’ll star in three projects coming up: Stay Forte (an Israel–Hamas war drama), There There (a unique twin-brother story), and Silent (a supernatural thriller). No release dates yet, but it’s exciting that the list of Selma Blair movies will keep growing. Keep an eye out – fingers crossed we get to stream these new films soon!
