Simon Rex’s career is a rollercoaster – from goofy MTV VJ antics to comedy cameos to that jaw-dropper performance in Red Rocket. He’s the dude who hosted MTV and then popped up in Scary Movie spoofs, Pledge This!, and even a tough indie like Red Rocket. That wild mix of goofy and gritty is why revisiting Simon Rex movies is such a blast. Trust me, whether you want belly laughs or are curious about his award-winning turn, there’s a Simon Rex movie out there for you. Let’s hit rewind and run through his coolest films in order!

A cheeky TV slasher parody (imagine Scream meets Friday the 13th), this was one of Simon’s earliest film gigs. The plot: a goofy reporter and a klutzy cop track a killer on spring break (the summary says “a reporter with a knack for tight spaces… tracks a klutzy killer before his dreaded Spring Break Massacre”). Simon Rex pops up as Slab O’Beef – one of the party kids. (Fun trivia: the title was originally way longer but changed to avoid legal troubles!) It’s as silly as it sounds – “trust me, this one had me laughing the entire time.” Right now you can catch Shriek on free streamer Tubi or The Roku Channel.
This is one of the Simon Rex movies that really packs a punch of parody. It spoofs 2000s hits like The Ring, Signs, The Matrix, and even 8 Mile. The story follows Cindy Campbell again (Anna Faris), but now she’s dealing with alien crop-circles and haunted videotapes. Simon plays George Logan, a friendly small-town guy who hilariously tries to rap and suddenly finds himself fighting aliens. The result is a genre-blending comedy that’s pure silly fun. It’s available on Netflix (region depending) or for rent on streaming.
More over-the-top parody madness! Here Cindy is joined by her new love interest Tom as they face aliens invading New York… after a breakout scene where Shaquille O’Neal and Dr. Phil wake up in a Saw-style trap with a creepy puppet. Seriously – it’s crazy from minute one. Simon Rex even does a quick cameo reprising George Logan (now the heroic farmer dad). The whole thing spoofs War of the Worlds, Saw, Harry Potter and even talks shows. If you need a dumb-out-loud comedy fix, this hit is on Amazon or often pops up on cable movie channels.
Before reality TV ruined everything, Paris Hilton made one big comedy movie (produced by… Paris Hilton). This toothy frat-girl flick has Paris leading a sorority and Simon as Derek, the flip-flop-wearing boyfriend. Plot? A dorm toilet explodes on move-in day, forcing misfit freshmen to pledge a crazy sorority in Miami. Hilarity (and lots of bikini shots) ensue as they fight a war of pranks to stay in. Trivia: Paris was so fed up with extra nude scenes that she infamously snubbed her own premiere! Pledge This! went straight to DVD, so you’ll have to rent or buy it (e.g. on Apple TV) to see all the ridiculousness.
Switching gears, this one’s a dark vampire thriller. Lucy Liu plays a reporter who wakes up in a morgue as a vampire and hunts down the cult that killed her. Simon Rex co-stars as Hank, one of the heavy hitters in the vampire gang. It’s a tense, bloody movie (definitely R-rated) – think Buffy meets noir. If you want to see Simon play a villain for a change, check this out on DVD/streaming (it’s usually for rent on Amazon).
Simon joins this spoof of the superhero craze way before MCU dominated screens. It mainly parodies Spider-Man (with Drake Bell as the goofy Peter Parker), but also hits up X-Men, Fantastic Four, Superman and tons of others. Simon Rex gets a terrific cameo as the Human Torch – literally popping up on screen as a guy on fire. (One laugh: his character yells “I’m on fire!” and it’s played for total absurdity.) It’s PG-13 goofy fun – “Trust me, this is Simon at his absolute best” for slapstick lovers. Catch Superhero Movie on most streaming rentals or DVD.
This is the final big Simon Rex movie entry in the Scary Movie spoof series. This time Simon plays Dan Sanders, a devoted new dad/scientist. Dan and his wife (Ashley Tisdale as Jody) adopt Charlie Sheen’s freaky feral kids (long story) – and then all hell breaks loose when a demon (the ghost from Mama) starts terrorizing their suburban home. It spoofs Paranormal Activity, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Ted, Cabin in the Woods… the works. Dan is wonderfully naive (think testing primates as smart as Chimpanzee Caesar, with hilarious results). It’s the goofiest of the Simon Rex movies, and you can stream it free (with ads) on The Roku Channel or Plex – perfect for a lazy comedy night.
A left-field one in his filmography, this is a rap-battle drama written by Eminem’s director (Joseph Kahn). Calum Worthy stars as a white grad student who turns his thesis on battle-rap into full-blown obsession. Simon plays Donnie “Narco” (a rapper who gets in the ring with the hero). The movie is wild and political, but it’s also one of the funniest music comedies out there – plus it even won Audience Awards at film festivals. You’ll see some of Simon’s rap trash-talk scenes that will crack you up. Bodied streams on Prime, YouTube TV (with ads), Roku, and others.
This is Simon Rex’s big award-winning turnaround role. He plays Mikey “Saber” Davies, a down-on-his-luck ex-porn star who leaves L.A. and moves back with his ex-wife in small-town Texas. Chaos and weirdness follow – Mikey is slick, hilarious, and heartbreaking all at once. It premiered at Cannes and Rex snagged the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead. Critics praised his performance (it’s pretty raw). You have to see it to believe it – Mikey is nothing like anything Rex’s ever done. Red Rocket is on Netflix now, so you can stream it easily.
A recent streaming hit, this Netflix comedy stars Zachary Quinto as a shy middle-aged guy and Lukas Gage as the high-energy masseur he hires for some “therapy”. Simon Rex appears in a smaller role among the quirky cast – but it’s such a dark, raunchy comedy that fans of Simon Rex movies are enjoying it. Think of it as Shame meets slapstick. The plot: the therapist helps Quinto through his first gay encounter… and then things spiral hilariously out of control. It’s on Netflix now, so you can watch it anytime.
Simon pops up in this weird crime-thriller ensemble. It follows a bunch of small-town South Dakota characters whose lives collide over a stolen “ghost shirt” (yes, a shirt that’s a local legend). Simon plays Roy Lee Dean, one of the wild locals. It premiered at SXSW 2023 and Lionsgate plans to release it in August 2025. If you like quirky indie thrillers (and spotting Simon in a dramatic role), keep an eye out when it hits theaters.
In this surreal road-trip satire, Simon joins a wild cast including Ayo Edebiri and Jacob Elordi. The film follows a high schooler who escapes a chaos-filled field trip and travels the East Coast, meeting anarchy-loving strangers. It’s an absurd, artsy movie (Sean Price Williams’s directorial debut) – definitely not a mainstream comedy. Simon is one of the “freaky weirdos” Lillian meets on her journey. It premiered at Cannes 2023 and released December 2023. It’s a trippy watch for hardcore movie buffs – find it on-demand or streaming from Utopia.
Yes, even Zoe Kravitz’s thriller has Simon in it! Blink Twice is a stylish psychological thriller (Debut of Kravitz as director) with Naomi Ackie and Channing Tatum. Simon Rex plays a supporting role in this madcap kidnapping plot. It hit theaters summer 2024 and is now streaming on Amazon Prime (since Amazon MGM distributed it). It’s a smaller part for him, but fans can catch him in the wild ensemble.
Coming soon! This Amalia Ulman-directed satire (filmed in Argentina) features Simon Rex alongside Chloë Sevigny and Alex Wolff. It’s about clueless rich Americans stranded on an Argentinian farm. The film premiered at Sundance 2025 and opens theatrically April 25, 2025. Think fish-out-of-water comedy meets dark satire. Definitely on the list of upcoming Simon Rex movies to watch!
Another 2025 project: a drama with Rose Byrne, Demi Lovato, Octavia Spencer…and Simon Rex as a tow-truck employee. It premiered at Tribeca 2025. The story centers on a homeless woman fighting her way out of debt after an astronomical tow bill. Simon’s character Cliff works for the tow company (basically: don’t mess with your tow trucks!). Keep an eye out for Tow in summer 2025.
Which Simon Rex movie will you watch first? Or have you already binged them all? His filmography is wild and unexpected – from dumb spoof humor to dark indie drama – so I’d love to know which one you think is his craziest or favorite. Drop your pick and let’s celebrate the one-and-only Simon Rex together!
