5 New Movies Streaming This Week on Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max & More (Aug 12–18)

From “Eddington” to “Night Always Comes” — here are the must-watch new releases hitting your favorite streaming platforms this week

.

It’s the middle of summer, and if the scorching heat outside has you running for shade, there’s a perfect escape — staying indoors with the AC on, snacks in hand, and a good movie queued up.
Luckily, streaming platforms are dropping some seriously interesting films this week. We’ve got dark comedies, animated chaos, creepy horror, magical adventures, and a tense one-night crime thriller.

Netflix is making a big comeback after a slower week, with two original films — one a completely outrageous adults-only animated comedy, and the other a gritty story about desperation and survival. Meanwhile, HBO Max has a magical fantasy from A24, Hulu is serving up a horror gem, and PVOD is offering a star-studded neo-Western from Ari Aster.

Let’s dive in — here are the top 5 new movies streaming this week that you’ll want to add to your watchlist.

1. 1. Eddington — One of the Top New Movies Streaming This Week

If you’ve seen Hereditary or Midsommar, you know director Ari Aster doesn’t exactly make “easy” movies. His work tends to be intense, strange, and not afraid to push boundaries. Now he’s back with Eddington — a neo-Western black comedy that’s already sparking debate among audiences, much like his previous Beau Is Afraid.

The cast is absolutely stacked: Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone. Yes, you read that right — four A-list names in one film.

The story is set in the small town of Eddington, New Mexico, during the COVID-19 pandemic. A clash between the sheriff (Phoenix) and the mayor (Pascal) over safety rules quickly spirals into chaos — and because it’s Ari Aster, you know things are going to get weird and probably disturbing.

If you’re already a fan of Aster’s work, you don’t need convincing. But if Beau Is Afraid left you feeling confused, this one might have the same effect — in the best way possible.

2. Fixed (Netflix)

Animated movies aren’t just for kids anymore — and Fixed is proof. In fact, this one is absolutely not for children. We’re talking crude jokes, sexual humor, and even some… well… anatomically explicit moments (the trailer makes that very clear).

This is actually Sony Pictures Animation’s first ever adults-only animated film, and they’ve gone all in. The voice cast is impressive too, featuring Adam Devine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn, and Fred Armisen.

The plot? A sweet terrier named Bull (voiced by Devine) learns that he’s getting neutered in just 24 hours. So, before this “life-changing” moment, he and his friends decide to go on one last wild adventure. Think The Hangover, but with talking dogs and a lot more questionable jokes.

If you’re in the mood for something outrageous, fast-paced, and completely unfiltered, Fixed might be your perfect late-night watch.

3. It Feeds

Sometimes the best horror movies are the ones that sneak up on you — and It Feeds is exactly that. I hadn’t even heard of it until I saw Hulu’s release calendar for the week, but after looking it up (and seeing that it has an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), it shot straight to my watchlist.

This horror-thriller stars Ashley Greene as Cynthia, a clairvoyant therapist living with her young daughter Jordan (Eli O’Brien). One night, a weak and terrified girl shows up at their door begging for help. She claims that an evil presence is after her — and it’s only a matter of time before it strikes again.

From there, Cynthia is pulled into a tense and terrifying mystery, racing against time to uncover the truth and stop whatever malevolent force is lurking.

If you like your horror with mystery, strong performances, and a slow build of dread, this one’s worth checking out.

4. The Legend of Ochi

If you’re craving something magical and heartwarming — but not overly kiddie — The Legend of Ochi could be exactly what you’re looking for.

The movie is a fantasy adventure from A24, and it’s earning praise for blending imagination, emotional depth, and stunning visuals. While it features an adorable creature (the “Ochi”), this isn’t purely a children’s movie. There are some deeper, more serious moments that adults will appreciate.

One of the coolest things? The Ochi creatures aren’t CGI — they were brought to life through old-school puppetry, which gives the film a unique and tactile feel you don’t see much anymore.

The story follows Yuri (Helena Zengel), a young girl living in a mountain village in Ukraine. She’s been warned never to go outside at night, but one day she finds a wounded baby Ochi. Determined to return it to its family, she sets out on a magical — and dangerous — journey.

5. Night Always Comes (Netflix)

Netflix hasn’t exactly been crushing it with their summer movies so far, but Night Always Comes looks like it might turn things around.

The film stars Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby, with direction by Golden Globe and Emmy winner Benjamin Caron. The setup is simple but incredibly tense: Kirby plays a woman who has just one night to raise $25,000 to save her family from losing their home.

As the night goes on, her desperation grows — and she’s willing to cross lines she never thought she would. It’s a gritty, high-stakes thriller that promises plenty of twists and moral dilemmas.

Also in the cast are Jennifer Jason Leigh, Zack Gottsagen, and Randall Park. Interestingly, the movie skipped the film festival circuit entirely, which could mean the studio wanted to keep the surprises under wraps.

📅 Streaming on Netflix from August 15
